1. Overview Summary

1.1 The Western Locomotive Association (WLA) has been in existence since 1974 and was incorporated in 1999, a company limited by guarantee in order to protect its members.

1.2 The WLA owns two Class 52 diesel hydraulic locomotives D1013 Western Ranger and D1062 Western Courier, which are maintained and operated on the Severn Valley Railway (SVR).

1.3 At the present time, D1013 is operational, whilst D1062 is in the final phase of a major overhaul. The WLA normally has one locomotive operational on the SVR during the running season (June to October) each year.

1.4 The WLA is run by a Committee of 9 people who normally meet 4 times a year in addition to the AGM, which is held in November of each year.

1.5 The workshop and storage facilities are located on the SVR at Bridgnorth, Shropshire.

1.6 The WLA is supported by approx. 275No. members and these include approx. 15No. “Working Members” who help maintain the locomotives at Bridgnorth.

1.7 Revenue for the WLA is mainly achieved through membership subscriptions, donations, driver experience courses and allowances from the SVR.

1.8 In order to survive for the long-term future, the WLA must aim to increase its membership numbers by raising its profile, helping with education and appealing to a wider market.

1.9 The WLA is aiming to raise its profile in order to help increase its membership numbers to 500No. over the next three years; completing the restoration of D1062 and considering an application for Charity Status.

1.10 To help complete the restoration of D1062, the WLA secured a Heritage Lottery Fund grant for the renovation of a failed transmission unit; the cost of repair is estimated at approx. £50k. The transmission is expected back from Voith in Germany during 2006.
