6. Sales

6.1 Sales revenue is usually generated by the following means:-

1. Membership subscriptions
2. General donations
3. Specific funds or appeals for donations
4. Donations by standing orders
5. SVR maintenance allowance
6. Driver Experience courses
7. Sales

6.2 Membership subscriptions total approx. £3.7k each year and covers the basic cost of running the Association including the cost of producing the “Western Courier” magazine which appears twice a year. The revenue is directly obtained from membership fees, which are reviewed each year by the Committee and voted for at the AGM.

6.3 General donations are received from both WLA members and members of the general public and vary from year to year.

6.4 Specific funds or appeals have been set up for funding particular projects such as the purchase of a new engine from Denmark and the repainting of D1062.

6.5 Donations by Standing Orders are made by various members and provide a steady monthly income. Members who donate £10.00 or more per month are within the "1000 Club" where a Driver Experience Course is drawn each year.

6.6 The SVR maintenance allowance covers both locomotives, so long as the WLA has one locomotive available for traffic during the year.

6.7 Revenue from Driver Experience Courses has provided useful income over recent year. There are usually 4 or 5 courses run during the year but there could easily be scope to increase this to 5 or 6 as the courses have proved popular and are fully booked at an early stage.

6.8 Revenue from product sales are virtually non-existent owing to the lack of a Sales Officer and suitable product range. However, sales have been indirectly achieved through Western Ranger Ltd through the sale of limited edition John Austin railway prints. In the past this has helped to finance items such as: repaints on D1013; the re-installation of AWS equipment; the fabrication of new name and number plates and purchase of engine parts. For the time being, product sales will continue through Western Ranger Ltd which will continue to help support the WLA as funds allow.
